In fact, the more I think about the ending, the less it makes sense. The narrator was lying and you don’t know beforehand which parts of the narration are true or not, so the ending doesn’t need to be a logical conclusion of the information the reader was given. To get past this, the unreliable narrator is a tool that gives authors an easy way out: It allows them to write an ending that is not consistent with the rest of the story. That is because readers have consumed much more media, books, shows and movies, and they are more likely to guess a twist ending. I’m starting to think that authors are sort of forced to resort to this kind of “cheat” endings. And even then, it’s an ending that has been done a million times before, and better than this. You feel cheated by the ending, because you were given flat-out false information. Narratively, it’s on the same level as “it was all a dream”. It makes sense only because the narrator is lying. Namely, the narrator purposely tells the story of how he caught his wife’s lover in parallel with the story in the psych ward, even though they happened at completely separate times.

Even though you could probably see it coming after the middle of the book (maybe even before that), it’s the worst kind of twist ending for my taste: it makes sense if and only if you take into consideration that the story was told by an unreliable narrator, who was free to lie as much as he pleased. Even though the first act slogged a little, it hit its stride at some point, and it was for the most part a fun, breezy read.īut I really want to talk about the ending, and the concept of unreliable narrators in general.
